Do I really need new shoes?
How often should you be changing your workout shoes?
I often hear people saying things like “My ankles just all of a sudden started hurting,” or “Running is uncomfortable for me now.” These may be signs of an injury, but they could also simply mean you need to change your shoes. Most researchers say you need to change out your running shoes every 300-500 miles. This means, if you run 4 miles per day, 5 days per week, you’ll need new shoes every 4-6 months, which, I know, seems kind of high. But, there are a lot of factors that go into this as well. Do you run on a treadmill or outside on the concrete? Are you only running or do you do other exercises as well? And, your weight and gate actually factor into these as well. So, if you’re running on a treadmill, you can get a little more wear out of your shoes, as well as if you’re doing other exercises or classes at a gym on a hardwood, rubber or other covered floor, or perhaps outside on the grass. A couple good rules of thumb to pay attention to, when you’re deciding if it’s time to head to the sports store are:
1. Do your shoes hurt any part of your body? Your toes, feet, ankles, calves or legs?
2. Is the sole bare? Look at the middle of the shoe or the ball of the foot on the sole and see if it is bare.
3. Do they have cracks in the soles?
4. Are they generally uncomfortable? A good way to test this is if you go try on a new pair of shoes and they feel like a dream compared to your old ones. If so, go ahead and splurge and treat yoself to a new pair of kicks.
5. Added bonus-a new pair of shoes is a great way to get yourself motivated to get up and moving!!!
